It's an alternative to paint that is applied as a powder then cured by heat (see link). The main advantage to it is that it doesn't require volatile solvents, so it doesn't pollute the air or endanger workers' health as much as some types of paint do.What does powder coating mean?why and when is it used and for what purpose?
Powder coating is a method of applying color to metal parts. It is akin to painting, but uses a slightly different technology. Powder coating is not subject to the same problems that many painting techniques are -- it bonds permanently to the metal and will not chip or flake. It can be scratched though, if the scratch goes deep enough to penetrate the powder coat to the metal beneath. Powder coating is most often applied to aluminum surfaces.
