Can you Powder Coat over chrome wheels?

I have a set of 4 chrome wheels two of which however the chrome is chipped and looks terrible I was just wondering if you can powder coat over chrome? Will it stick? I know I can鈥檛 sandblast it off and they don鈥檛 make a chemical remover so how do I make the rims usable again? Can you Powder Coat over chrome wheels?
Well, I wrote a book on the subject so let me give it a try:

Chroming; like powder-coating, is adding material to a substrate (the aluminum, steel, etc underneath). If the chrome is chipped then chances are that the initial preparation of the steel and/or aluminum was not prepared properly to begin with and anything you put over the chrome will come off in time, but not as quickly as the chrome itself.

Adding a powder coat (or paint) over chrome will only slow the rate of loss since the powder is bonded to the chrome (more on that later). If the chrome comes loose, anything bonded to the top of it will fall off by default (excepting tension bonding on the edges of the chrome ';flake';).

So, there we go. In short, if the chrome is flaking off then adding a powder coat or paint will simply slow down the process if you do not remove the loose chrome.

My shop has done lots of work on wheels just like yours and here is how we do it:

Strip off any ';flakes'; of chrome that are readily visible. Depending on the material underneath (steel or aluminum), use either a steel or brass wire wheel to get the majority off and smooth. Be agressive here since you want to make sure anything not firmly adhered will come right off. Smooth the edges of the ';good'; chrome and the substrate with a fine wire wheel (finer than for rough removal).

An important part; ';scuff'; any remaining ';shiny'; chrome with a scotchbrite pad, 120-grit wet/dry sandpapaer or a wire wheel with fibers that can truly scuff the ';shine'; out of the chrome. It is painful, but you have to do it to give the powder coat something to adhere on a molecular level when it cures.

Give the wheel a muratic acid bath to remove any oils or contaminates. This stuff is really nasty and dangerous (used to unplug toilets). You can probably get away with Aircraft Stripper which is used to remove paint (I know, no paint on chrome right?) but it will remove all oils, etc. Rinse the wheel VERY well. Rinse again, rinse again.

Now for the fun stuff; put the wheel in the oven for 1 hour at 400 degrees, remove and allow to cool. Using gloved hands (cloth preferred) (so you don't contaminate the part) it can now be powder coated. Do not allow it to sit around for days after this step or dust will settle on it, ruining any future powder coating until the wheel is cleaned again.

At this point, you can powder coat or bring it to an knowledgeable powder coater; not an industrial powder coating shop. Bring it to someone that specializes in high-end automotive and/or motorcycle work since that requires much more attention to detail that coating a lamp post or stop sign.

Finally; since your wheels are already flaking chrome, chances are you may be better off putting them on eBay for someone else to worry about since a truly professional powder coating shop will charge between $100 and $200 a wheel for cleaning up the wheels, smoothing the chrome, dealing with nasty chemicals, rinsing and re-rinsing and finally applying the powder (price goes WAY up with translucents, prismatics, etc). If you decide to do the wheels you have then you can expect a 12+ year lifespan before any noticable ';dulling';. The powder coat itself, if done by a professional shop, should come with a 5 year warranty (curb-scrapes excepted).

It may not be the answer you looking for but too much information is better than not enough. I do work for several of the ';build-it-up'; shows on television shows so I have a fair amount of experience in dealing with these types of situations.

PCH_AuthorCan you Powder Coat over chrome wheels?
i powder coat for a living and yes you can properly prep. chrome for powder the chrome needs to be ground off with a 36 grit grinding disc. then an 80 grit to remove grind marks. after that clean it and spray it they will be good as new Report Abuse

It would appear that chrome is neither paintable or powder coatable.

I found this on the web (see the question and answer about this topic):

http://www.finishing.com/224/92.shtml

In their words:

';But, as a rule, chrome is not paintable or powder coatable. You may be able to strip the chrome off the nickel with muriatic acid, and then powder coat it. It's worth trying. Have a plating jobshop strip the chrome off of a few test parts for you.';

Hope this helps. Shame to toss good wheels.
You can have the wheels powder coated.

First they are sandblasted to provide a ';bite'; for the powdercoat to grab.

Once this is done, it's not easy to reverse so make sure you pick the color carefully.
yes they scuff them up and powder coat . but look in the news paper see if you can find used wheels mite be cheaper.but not sure.
i own a repair shop, and no you cant ,it has to have a surface similar to a paint surface to stick real good to if you sand blasted them and prepped them you could, and it would probably last for ever but that's the only proper way to do it,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Comparing materials for porch railings--vinyl, powder coated aluminum, or composite?

Which is best? Aluminum seems expensive and doesn't have the long warranty? I've only seen composite on decks, not on white porches. How many different qualities are there?Comparing materials for porch railings--vinyl, powder coated aluminum, or composite?
There is a vast selection of composite railing materials out there that are relatively cheap %26amp; have good warranties.

Most home improvement centers carry them, %26amp; have brochures.

Hope this helps, good luck!Comparing materials for porch railings--vinyl, powder coated aluminum, or composite?
This depends entirely on your budget.Anything from resin ,vinyl and wood etc.Vinyl is expensive but is maintenance free.I would suggest vinyl for durabillity and looks.I have treated wood rails painted white and it looks excellent

Filler metal that can be powder coated?

I have an aluminum engine cover that I am going to have powder coated, however, it has a couple holes in it I would like to fill in. The holes on this thing are pretty unsightly. I would like to know what I can use to fill these ugly holes and still allow my part to be powder coated.

I have also heard JB weld will not work with powder coating.Filler metal that can be powder coated?
No, your best best is to just weld it. a good weld and grind and it'll look like new. If your not a welder, a local shop can probably do something like that cheaper that you'd imagineFiller metal that can be powder coated?
Here's a material I know that you can use to weld/ fill the holes using a hand torch. Then just file or grind flush and sand smooth. FYI, some folks in my area sand them through several grits of sand paper and scotch-brite to a high-polish, then anodize them for a really nice look.

How Hot Do Valve Covers Get? Can I Powder Coat, or Is That High Temp?

was going to powder coat a valve cover, but do I need high temp? How hot do they get normally? How Hot Do Valve Covers Get? Can I Powder Coat, or Is That High Temp?
They don't get as hot as the engine block. I've seen some powder coated and they seemed to stand up O.K.How Hot Do Valve Covers Get? Can I Powder Coat, or Is That High Temp?
use a high temp. rustolem paint. the valve cover will get to the water temp of the engine, approx190 degrees. the reason for the rustolem paint, in time the valve covers will rust, and if you use the rustolium paint, the cover will never rust through, and give you a hole in the cover !!!
I can't tell you in degrees how hot they get,but powdercoat will stand much more heat than that.If you need a professional answer call the powdercoat company.
Powder coating will work fine.It will probably outlive the engine!

  • Can you metallic flake (metal flake paint job) over a powder coated base color?

YesCan you metallic flake (metal flake paint job) over a powder coated base color?
I would suggest that you sand the powder coat with a 180 grit paper then prime the wheels then sand the wheels again with a finer paper 320 or 400 grit would work fine. Then seal the wheels with a sealer, then they are ready to paint %26amp; clear worry free. Today's paints are bad about lifting some bottom coats( because of the hot solvents they take) if their not properly primed and seal prior to painting. Hope this helps.

Should I paint or powder coat my Calipers?

I want to get my Brembo Calipers painted but should I paint or powder coat it?Should I paint or powder coat my Calipers?
Paint will trap in heat and cause your brake pads to get hotter.Should I paint or powder coat my Calipers?
    DEFINATLY POWDER COAT
I would just use a high temp engine paint and paint them. That would be easier than pulling them off and powder coating them. Your call though.
There is a specific paint used for brake calipers that is heat resistant and brake fluid resistant. It is much less expensive and less time consuming than powder coating. Plus, powder coating has some definite draw-backs compared to caliper paint.

In addendum: After reading some of the answers given, take this to heart. If you powder coat, you are stuck with that particular color, as powder coating is extremely difficult to get off and redo, plus, a small chip is not repairable without stripping the powder coat off and redoing the job. What does Brembo use.....';Caliper paint';, not powder coating. Also, with powder coating, you will have to re-tap any threaded areas and you have to be extremely careful not to get the coating in the piston region. To reduce heat that you may be ';afraid'; of trapping, there is a ceramic coating that you can have done to your pistons to reduce heat entrapment. That is what we do for the Vipers we race, and we use ';HUGE'; Brembo brakes.
If it was me I would say Powder coat.

Its designed for use in areas such as brakes and looks great. And yes I agree with the person who spoke about heat transfer.
I'd go with powdercoat, or a high quality high temp paint.
Well powder coating will last longer - but the calpier will need to be rebuilt

By using high heat paint like engine enamel

You can spray them and bolt them back on
Powder coat. Paint will melt from the heat.
    como esta
powder coat because the paint will get hot and flake off over time
    Power coat is much better.

Since Bloomberg hates guns that are color powder coated, does he hate airsoft too?

Bloomberg and his billionaire friends have spent millions to try and defeat the NRA.

His NY mob recently went after a man with a collectible Flintlock which is not subject to any gun bans.

Do you think one or 2 people with billions of dollars should speak for 75 million who support the second amendment?

Does Bloomberg's security detail agree with him?Since Bloomberg hates guns that are color powder coated, does he hate airsoft too?
    No NO but H$!! NO!

They get mine if they can pry it from my cold dead fingers and not until then.Since Bloomberg hates guns that are color powder coated, does he hate airsoft too?
Bloomberg just might be our next president. He has less interest in actually defeating the NRA than he does in consolidating political power.
    Liberals are phuckwad!
No he should not and does not speak for millions. He has his opinion and if people agree or are bought so be it.j
People who demand pink guns are sick.

Seriously, NY has one of the strictest gun laws in the country, since long before Bloomberg. We also have a surprising low crime rate considering the population and poverty levels. Neither have we had any spree crimes or Columbines. I think its working just fine.

    And I do have guns.

Butterscotch or toffee cookies with powdered sugar coating?

I'm looking for a recipe... a girl from my work brought these in on her last day and I won't ever get to see her again to find out what they are or the recipe!! Maybe someone out there has a similar recipe...

They were either butterscotch cookies or toffee cookies (I'm thinkin butterscotch)... they had some type of nuts in them... and I think they were no bake... but I could be wrong. They also had a coating of powered sugar on them. Anyone have any ideas?Butterscotch or toffee cookies with powdered sugar coating?
    INGREDIENTS

1 (18.25 ounce) package butter cake mix

1 (3.4 ounce) package instant butterscotch pudding mix

    1/4 cup all-purpose flour

    3/4 cup vegetable oil

    1 egg

    1 cup chopped pecans

    1 cup butterscotch chips

    DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.

In a medium bowl, stir together the cake mix, instant pudding and flour. Add oil and egg, mix until well blended. Stir in the pecans and butterscotch chips. Batter will be somewhat crumbly.

Scoop cookies with a small ice cream scoop or compress 1 tablespoon of dough into a ball. Place 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, until the edges are just starting to brown. Allow cookies to cool for 2 minutes before removing from baking sheet to cool on wire racks.

For me toffee, butterscotch would be too sweet with the sugar coating

What can I do to make sure this strange white powder coating everything on my job isn't a health hazard?

My job relocated from a clean modern building with great maintenance and security, to a dirty rodent infested building that's at least 40 years old because it was more cost effective.

The water fountains are turned off because of the lead pipes. There are mouse dropping in my cubicle everyday and the whole office is coated in a strange white powder. The building has repeatedly been sited by the health department but nothing has been done.

OSHA has tested the powder and says its not Legionaries Disease, which one of our other buildings did have, and its not asbestos, even though a contractor left the building and refused to complete repairs on our AC claiming the building had asbestos. They says it has a high mold content but that's not something they deal with.

A lot of people in the building have a persistent cough and my desk is right under a vent so I not only have a cough but have horrible headaches as well.

I currently have to wipe my desk off with bleach wipes everyday just to keep the dust off my clothes. The dust is so thick when I come to work on Mondays that you can write in it. Plus its not like regular dust as its grainy. I really think this stuff is dangerous but I can't afford to quit and look for a new job.

What can I do to find out what this stuff is? And how can I protect myself? What can I do to make sure this strange white powder coating everything on my job isn't a health hazard?
Take a brush and sweep up some of the material into a small clean and dry bottle (like a pill bottle). Then look in the yellow pages for an asbestos lab. Send them the sample and they will give you a report. Call them first that you want a complete breakdown, not just positive/negative. It is probably just dust, fibers, and maybe some fiberglass, but only testing can tell. EMSL is a national lab that can help (answerer is not affiliated). Call the closest location and explain what you have concerns about. If it is only normal dust, there is not much you can do beyond what you already do. I would use something like lysol wipes in rotation with the bleach wipes for better coverage. Use a different one type each day but not at the same time. What can I do to make sure this strange white powder coating everything on my job isn't a health hazard?
I don't know how you can find out what the dust is apart from reporting this to the Occ Health and Safety authorities.

You need to get yourself moved to a different desk. Tell your employer that it is making you sick and that you don't want them to have to be liable for huge medical bills.

You say you cannot afford to change jobs but can you afford to get mesothelioma if it is asbestos? Even if it is something else, you are breathing that in and your lungs could form scar tissue around the deposits. Any type of irregularity in the form or function of your lungs can cause cells to get out of whack with their dividing and that is the beginning of cancer. At the very least you could get one of a number of lung and/or respiratory conditions

You have to either change jobs or move to a different area. Dust that you can write in is not good! Especially when it isn't dust! Put pressure on the health department and if you can, put pressure on your employers. Let them know that it could end up being more expensive if they do nothing.

Good Luck and think of your future. When you are lying in a hospital bed suffering, you will wish you got the heck away from that weird ';dust';.

Does anyone think its a good idea to get my 20inch bmx powder coated rather than respraying it myself?

Powder coat! I have had my frames powder coated, and I love the results. There are literally hundreds of colors available, including metallics and clear coats. You can have them base it in color -- add graphics -- then have it clear coated in powder.

The best thing is they do the professional preparation. Either chemical removal or bead blasting -- or both -- to the old paint.

No paint coating is as durable as powder coat.

FYI -- I can drop off a frame and fork, and pick it up finished for $150.Does anyone think its a good idea to get my 20inch bmx powder coated rather than respraying it myself?
Yes powder coating is better for the environment and will get you a nicer looking paint job that lasts longer.

  • What's better, galvanized or powder coated rat cages?

I'm looking for a good rat cage, in the price range of $30-65.00.

I will NOT buy from PetSmart or PetCo.

I only have one rat, and she's currently being housed in a glass aquarium, and she's not doing too well in it, so I'm looking for something better for her.

I also will not use cage toppers; they are far too diffucult to clean.

Thanks. What's better, galvanized or powder coated rat cages?
Galvanized is definantly better. They chew they powder coated ones up and eat it off the bars. Get the thicker strand wire, I had a cage with thin wire bars and some of my rats could snap the threads in half. Try martins cages, I have boughten and used their ideas in making my cages for rats! Not to hard to clean i just got a wire cleaner brush and spray bottle with weak bleach solution. Took it outside sprayed it down and rinsed with hose, I let it dry and bam it was done.

http://www.martinscages.com/products/cag鈥?/a>What's better, galvanized or powder coated rat cages?
rat urine and galvanized steel are something i personally would not mix!

I say powder coated!!! PVC is ok too but powder coating lasts much longer.

Martinscages.com has excellent cages! both the rat and ferret ones should be considered.. when i had my rats they lived in the F-475 it was ratty heaven.

2 cubic feet per rat is recommended when caging...

here is a page to compare the sizes of Martinscages:

    http://www.goosemoose.com/component/opti鈥?/a>

other alternatives for a single rat would be a med/lrg bird cage, or a homemade cabinet style cage...

    Here is a whole bunch of cages and thier setups for you to look through so you can come up with something you like;

    http://www.goosemoose.com/component/opti鈥?/a>

(my pics are on page 2 under the name boobaloo if your curious)
Definitely powder coated! It's so much better on their feet when climbing and stays clean much longer. It's really easy to clean too.

I am not a big fan of Petsmart, but for smaller cages (especially Super Pet type cages) they are definitely the cheapest. Otherwise, martins cages are good. Just a suggestion, get a friend for your rat. They are so much happier in pairs or multiples. Adding another rat won't take up more of your time or be any more expensive. If anything, it will save you money because it will keep your current rattie occupied and happy. They are definitely social creatures.

For more info on cages and lots of rat info in general, visit http://www.goosemoose.com/rfc

It's a great rat forum with tons of fun people and great information.
galvanized will be better. Powerder coated cages look good, but rats will definatley claw it up and make it look cheap. I would definatley go with galvanized.

Do you know how powder coating services can be used for pharmaceutical industry?

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a ';skin.'; The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as ';whiteware';, aluminium extrusions, and automobile and bicycle parts. Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard), to be powder coated using different methods.

source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powder_coatingDo you know how powder coating services can be used for pharmaceutical industry?
Yes they can. In our case it was a 20% bleach wipe-down application on a welded steel base and misc mild steel components.

The powder coat is holding up better than a simply painted (sprayed) coating. The lower out gassing is an added/wanted benefit.

    We chose:

Epoxy - hard - chemical resistant - excellent corrosion protection.

Color: white - it's medical - looks better - looks cleaner.

Smooth texture - requirement to stay clean and easy to wipe down.

Sure you can! Wash with hot soap and water, If it is not clear coated you can use a etching aluminum wheel cleaner. Re-wash.Use a 3M Scotch Brite pad and scuff all areas including corners, Use Krylon semi-flat black paint ( I always warm the paint in a sink full of hot water for about 5 minutes, aids in drying to a harder finish), apply several coats at different angles to get full coverage. Since this not not actual powder coating you may have to refinish once a year. I need a name for a mobile powder coating business?

My home based business is Mobile powder coating. Powder coating is normally done in a plant with paint booths and curing ovens. This new technique allows for the mobile coating of wood, steel, plastic, concrete, fiberglass anything that can withstand a brief blast of heat. The service can be performed at the job site or at the manufacturers location. The technique utilizes a paint gun that forcesthe powdered paint thru an open flame which then heats the powder to liquify then adhears while cooling to the above mentioned substartes. Curing is almost immediate and finished product can be used immediatly after cooling (forced or natural).I need a name for a mobile powder coating business?
Make sure people can find the name when they do a normal search in a phone book. In other words, make sure the first 2 words are ';Power Coat.'; Power Coat To Go would work. It's not a ';sexy'; name, but it certainly lends to easy advertising.

I want to substitute the cocoa powder with a thick and creamy chocolate sauce, does anyone know what I can do?How can I make thick chocolate sauce using cocoa powder, to coat mt chocolate truffles?
i like to take a dove chocalte bar and melt it with a lil milk but the more chocolate you use the thicker the chocolate will melt. so go by what you see when you melt the chocolate when you add milk.

How can I make thick chocolate sauce using cocoa powder, to coat mt chocolate truffles?
    Ingredients:

    1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

    3/4 cup whipping cream

    1 teaspoon vanilla

    Preparation:

In a small saucepan over low heat, heat chocolate chips and whipping cream, stirring constantly. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until chocolate is melted and sauce is smooth. Stir in vanilla.

Serve over dessert or ice cream.

    Makes about 1 1/4 cups.
Melt about 6 to 8 oz. milk chocolate with 1 tablespoon shortening. Insert toothpicks into the truffles and dip into the melted chocolate.

Truffles can also be rolled in coconut or powdered sugar. Both taste pretty good.
Go to Starbucks and buy there cocoa mix(yes, they do sell it). Mix some with warm water and it makes for a really good chocolate sauce.
Melt chocolate chips and dip the truffles in that. Or use Hershey kisses and melt them.
if you whisk in a little cornstarch it will thicken it up.

    1/4 c. cornmeal

(Use extra cornmeal to dust counter top when rolling dough)

    1/4 c. wheat germ

    1/4 c. milk

    1 egg, beaten

1/4 c. chicken or beef broth

1 lg. clove garlic, crushed or minced fine

1 tbsp. soft butter or 2 tbsp. oil

(Can add some grated carrots or 1 tbsp. molasses)

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Sift dry ingredients together. Mix liquid ingredients in separate bowl. Gradually add liquid to dry ingredients with a sturdy spoon. Add garlic and butter or 2 tablespoons oil. Add cornmeal to stiffen the mixture (if needed) for an easily rolling consistency. Lightly sprinkle cornmeal on counter, roll dough out to a thickness of 1/8 inch.

Use your dog's favorite cookie cutter. Place biscuits on cookie sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes. Cool biscuits before feeding or storing. If not used quickly, store in freezer. They are preservative free.

To plan for me. There are powder coating kits at Northern Tool and Harbor freight. If the rim will fit into your home oven you can get good results.
I just got a quote for toy fj cruiser wheels (17';). eighty per rim. shop is in L.B.,Ca. yes black will look good. try leaving the outer lip alum ( I like scotch-briting)%26amp; chrome lug nuts(if exposed). good luck

what's your take/experience on powder coating stock rims/wheels?

im thinking of doing it to my 2008 Scion tC

most likely im going to powder coat them white to match the color of my carPowder coating rims/wheels?
It would cost double of just buying a new set of rims and tires. When powder coating the factory wheels, you will have to remove the tires, ($20-$40 each), then pay the powder coater for the services, about $300-$500 PER WHEEL! and the pay to have the tires remounted. You can get an awesome set of white wheels and tires that look MUCH better than factory wheels for about $1000.Powder coating rims/wheels?
powder coating does look good and is very tough, much harder than spray paint.

well with powder coating i would think that it would have to be a shade of the color of the car, like of it was a black car, it would be a shade of black, meaning gray, grayish or light black.

I would suggest getting new rims, powder coating your rims would not look very good. I think you still should tint your windows though.
if you're gonna spend money, you might as well go out and buy aftermarket rims.
paint them, altho i think black wont look good at all.

I have zinc rich primer powder-coated part. Will a latex top coat adhere to a powder coat primer finish ?

I agree, the latex will not adhere for long to the powder coat primer. I would either have it sandblasted or sand it down or use a naval jelly type remover, re-prime it and then paint it. I tried to use Hammerite over a zinc powder-coated item and in very short order, it began to flake off.I have zinc rich primer powder-coated part. Powder Coating works really well, even on rims. It is very durable and looks great. Just make sure that they are primed properly. We have done a number, well actually allot of rims, they all look great and there has never been a problem.

I say go for it if you don't like the stock color, you won't regret it.Powder coating rims/wheels?
Powder coating can look nice if sprayed evenly. However if your car has some sort of exotic standout color I might suggest spraying the rims a neutral color like silver, black or white.

    Powder coating car parts...?

Is the powder coating from Summit Racing epoxy based or poly based? Is this stuff going to have any UV resistance or not?Powder coating car parts...?
You'll have to ask them -- many paint finishes on automobiles and products are water based due to environmental concerns but have excellent UV resistance factor. The basis for powder coating lies in the process itself -- no solvents are used at all. Metal parts are suspended in a chamber where an electrical charge passes through them, causing powdered paint material to 'bond' to the charged parts.

    2 Tone Powder Coating?

A friend and i are thinking about powder coating some engine parts and our rims. we are about to buy all of the supplies including the sandblaster, hot coat powder coating gun, powder and anything else we need. but my question is when we start to do our valve covers on our cars we want to do a 2 tone job. for example we would want the valve cover to be white and the the nissan logo and name to be red. how would we go about doing that? or another example if i wanted my rims to be mirror black but i wanted the lips of the rims to be chrome.2 Tone Powder Coating?
A few things to consider from the coatings performance point of view:

-The valve covers get hot and are exposed to petroleum distillates. Be very sure you get the right powder product and prepare the surfaces correctly or, your paint job will last less than a few hours. Even so, White colors yellow terribly with heat. Expect to be disapointed.

-wheels. This is my specialty. I am inthis industry supplying coatings to OEM and aftermarket wheel guys. Wheel painting is a tedious process. I assume your rims are aluminum. Painting aluminum requires a multistep pretreatment process to get good adhesion. Then a good powder coating for corrosion and durability. Then painting and a good clear coat. The paint is usually baked 30 minutes at 150 Celsius to get good cure and performance. Any air dry coating you might consider will last all of a few months. Chroming and painting are different processes and do not blend well. I applaud you for being creative, but your plan is a tough one to achieve with any long term durability. Good luck. Hope it looks great.2 Tone Powder Coating?
Here's a discussion on a powder coating forum:

    http://forum.caswellplating.com/powder-c鈥?/a>

Basically, they came up with two methods: First would be to go all one color, bake it, mask off what you don't want to coat with the second color (like a stencil), remove the masking, and bake it again.

The second method would be to mask off what you don't want one color, spray it, bake it until it's half cured, let it cool, mask off the other color, spray it again, remove the masking, and do a complete curing bake.

I would test out these methods on scrap first. But, they seem reasonable.

I did all the chrome on a black Suburban using this method over a year ago and it still looks great! Is is possible to paint a ';black satin powder coating w/ a shining polished face'; aluminum grill black? steps?

Can you powder coat something and cure it in a regular oven?

Well first off forgive me if the question sounds stupid and I sound like a total newbie but theres something that I wanted to powder coat on my car and its a small enough of a piece to fit in my oven. I was wonder would it be possible to cure it in my regular oven. And if your wondering the peice is metal. Can you powder coat something and cure it in a regular oven?
Yes you can use a regular oven to cure the powder coat. You only need 300-500 degrees for the powder coat to cure. However, it is HIGHLY recommended that you use a dedicated oven for this, rather than one that you cook in, since residue may adhere to the oven walls.....Sooo unless you really feel like cleaning out the oven I'd say buy another one for powder coating or use your neighbors ;-)

One more thing...NEVER USE A GAS OVEN, explosion will occur. Can you powder coat something and cure it in a regular oven?
Yes you can, my buddy does powder coating of valve covers, intake manifolds, air cleaners and other items and uses the oven in his kitchen to cure it.

I don't know all the process he uses, but my valve covers he did look damn nice....
you dont take it to a shop cheapo
Yes you can, however, powder coating does require a static charge. You can buy bake viscosity wet applications as well and would probably be easier to apply as it does not require static to adhere to the part. Bake all coatings at the recommended temperature from the paint manufacturer. Also, bake viscosity paints are usually non-petroleum based and non-flammable (but check with manufacture to be safe). Good luck !
You have to buy the powder coater spray system if you don't have it already. I think you only need about 250 or something to cure it, but I warn you. . . IT WILL STINK! And it will stink for the next few times you use your oven. Try it and let us know how it turns out. :)
Nope i doubt you can static charge the item to keep the powder coat on. And even less likely your over gets hot enough to cure it.
Yes you can use a regular oven. Many people use a conventional oven for the process of curing. One of the great things about powder coating is not just the look and durability but that it is simple to do.

  • Do you know how powder coating services can be used for pharmaceutical industry?

The powder coat is holding up better than a simply painted (sprayed) coating. The lower out gassing is an added/wanted benefit.

    We chose:

Epoxy - hard - chemical resistant - excellent corrosion protection.

Color: white - it's medical - looks better - looks cleaner.

Smooth texture - requirement to stay clean and easy to wipe down.

  • Powder coating question?

if i were to powder coat a metal part can it come out shiny or will it come out flat also how hard is it for the paint to chipPowder coating question?
Finished in powder coat can be gloss, matt or hammer.

It will not chip that easily but will depend on the powder used. Some are harder while others are more flexible.

For a good quality finish its very important to have a clean surface. If its rusty at all, sand blast it. Next an acid bath. Then another which I can't remember, posssibly to neatralize the acid. At this stage no contact with your hand as it will effect quality.

After baking allow enought time to cool.Powder coating question?
I think it all depends on the type of powder coating they use if it comes out shiney or not and yes it is pretty durable as far as chips are concerned.

    Is powder coating Toxic?

I have been powder coating at home and was curious if it was toxic to breath and toxic to prolonged exposure to skin. I do wear the masks most of the time, but when cleaning and switching powders (or just plain in the process of powder coating), I constantly get the powder on my skin and on my hands. Is this bad, really bad, or not too bad? Same for the vapors from the oven when I open it.Is powder coating Toxic?
It depends on whether the enamel is polymer-based or not. Different risks are associate with different powder-coating materials. Polymer toxins vs heavy metal poisoning. I would wear a respirator and not breathe the fumes. Ventilate!

I have not heard of powdercoating of fibreglas. Since the process is based upon creating an electrostatic charge, conductivity of the surface/material to establish a ground is needed. • Powder coating atv frame?

I want to powder coat my lt250r frame and i was just wondering is it really hard that hard to take apart the whole quad.Powder coating atv frame?
taking it apart is the easy part. putting it back together is much harder. make sure you disassemble it it an organized fashion. making sure not to lose anything. the best way i found is to have an exploded view of your quad (microfisch) or service manuak as microfisch are becoming harder to find. also; make sure you tape off any bearing casings (housings) on your frame such as swingarm, steering head, or any other things that a bearing would go into.

    Powder coating prep ?

I have a killer BMX frame I want to have powder coated for strength vs. regular paint. My question is for the prep work. I don't want to have the frame sandblasted due to the thinning/weaking of the tubing it causes. Can't I just sand it to bare metal by hand???Powder coating prep ?
Well, thats a first! I never even thought of the possibility of sandblasting through a metal tube.

When I build steel frames, sometimes the tube is as thin as 0.007'; (7 thousandths of an inch) and I sandblast EVERY frame prior to finishing.

If your frame is steel (CrMo or Hiten) don't worry about it. You'll take off more metal by hand sanding. If your frame is aluminum then you will either have to strip it chemically or have it walnut-shell blasted.

I personally dislike powdercoating... just too heavy looking... too thick.Powder coating prep ?
I had a frame powdercoated, and I did the sanding myself only because I'm cheap. The frame was 0.035'; Chromo, which is very robust. It could have easily handled being sandblasted. Check the wall thickness of your frame. it's only the frames that sound like Coke(tm) cans when you tap on them that would have a problem with sandblasting.

    Powder coating chrome.?

ok before i get flamed. i am going to powder coat my chrome rims and i do know that i need to strip the chrome off first. but i only wanted to powder coat the inner part of the of the rim design. so my question is when i go to bake the powder coating i am wondering if it would run the existing chrome?Powder coating chrome.?
Spray the outter part of the rim with cheap Krylon, then spray the inner part with powder coat, and then bake it. The Krylon will protect the outter portion of the chrome and keep it from being powder coated, and the heat from the furnace will eventually burn all the krylon and it will just flake off afterward.Powder coating chrome.?
powder coat bake temp is around 350 deg f.

the better question is how to selectively strip the chrome.

should make the chrome slightly yellow, might not at 350 deg
There is a speed shop in portsmouth N.H. that I have been to a few times. They sell powdercoated crome engine parts the still look like chrome just in a color. He said they don't strip the crome and just bake the powdercoat right over it.

Survey: Why does the powder coating inside the fluorescent Soft Serve Light Bulbs taste bad?

It must have had a crack in it. The argon gas, or whatever they use nowadays has a shelf life of 16,000 years without significant damage to the flavor unless it's exposed to air.

Hey, if Mercury was good for Queen it's good enough for ME!Survey: Why does the powder coating inside the fluorescent Soft Serve Light Bulbs taste bad?
The white. powdery mercuric coating inside a fluorescent bulb was intentionally made to taste bad in only one specific scenario: It was designed to taste bad only if and when some mindless idiot exercised his stupidity by tasting it. Other than that situation, it doesn't taste bad, because it is never taste tested.Survey: Why does the powder coating inside the fluorescent Soft Serve Light Bulbs taste bad?
Because it is a nasty chemical coating inside the bulb.
Could be you just got a hold of a bad bulb. Isn't the mercury used as a flavor enhancer?
You probably just got a bad batch. Check the expiration.

Like said, you must take things like starters, alts, etc apart and just coat the outside case, then put them back together.

You can do water pump too but it has to be type of pump that you can take the back plate off of, get to impler and remove all gaskets/seals, etc then coat and put back togetherPowder coating Engine?
You don't powder coat a starter, you powder coat the starter housing with all internals removed. Same with alternators, just powder coat the case. Parts like water pumps are best not messed with for fear of messing up the seals. Intakes, oilpans, valve covers are easily powder coated. I have done numerous myself.
if you powder coat the engine block and starter, the thin layer of powder cooating may throw of crucial allignments liek starter to ring gear and tranny to engine. i wouldnt recommend it
seems like the coating on the windings of the starter would suffer

More than an aftermarket set of wheels and tires. A quality powder coat job will be in the neighborhood of $200-$300 PER WHEEL. Remember you have to remove the tire, completely sandblast and clean the wheel, then powder coat them. After this you have to have the tires re-mounted and balanced. To do a 2 tone powder coat expect another $50-$100 PER WHEEL, then to chrome just the lip around $100-$200 per wheel.
Around $250 but a little extra for the red unless the rim comes stock like that

How thick should powder coat spray paint be put on metal before baking?

I assisted in powder coating one of my race car chassis'.

How thick to apply it depends on how thick you want the finish. There are some items that can be coated up to 20 mils!!!

if you have an intricate piece the details are less apparent and corners and such are softened.

Usually they measure the thickness in Mil's

Less than 1 mil and you will likely have pin holes in your finish.

You can go fairly thick with the stuff its just harder to get a uniform finish.

2-3 mils is what is recommend.

Its tough to figure out the thickness of a Mil, but if you go to home depot and look at masking plastic, look for 3 mil plastic and just try to gauge it off of that. It is not really all that thick.

** Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder.

The problem with powder coating, besides its cost, is the necessity to send the piece away. Make sure you place them in the areas designed for ground supporting the vehicle.I am going to get my rims powder coated and will I need to jack my car for a week, is that bad?
    jack stands are fine.
It does't matter as long as you can do it safely, and what you srand the car on can take the weight.

    I stress SAFELY.
jack stands are your best bet
Just mount it on jackstands and you will be fine. On a totally unrelated note, why is it taking that long to get them powdercoated? I run a collision center and we have a wheel repair company that also does custom work on rims. They always have them back to us within 48 hours no matter what we want done.
Jack stands will work the best. Just make sure you place them in the right spots. For a unibody car, there should be hardpoints for jack stands (see the owner's manual). For a body on frame car, just place the jacks under the frame itself.

How do you repair a powder coated bumper?

I have powder coated bumpers on my jeep and they are starting to show a small bit of surface rust. is there any way to repair them with out having them recoated? How do you repair a powder coated bumper?
If you've got powder coating that's showing rust, then you've probably worn through the powder coating in those places and you need a repair.

There are two courses of action (maybe more) once you make sure that it's worn through.

One is to find a matching paint. It's possible that you can find something like a duplicolor. What I would prefer myself would probably be a custom mix on color and luster than could be heat dried, i.e. a heat lamp or something else. It makes a better bond assuming there is an equal surface preparation.

It might be possible to do a spot recoat, but probably not and you'd want to be sure you had someone who knew his stuff before you tried it.

Recoating the whole bumper is probably the best option. If you can take it off and put it back on, you're ahead of the game. There are shops all over the place that do this. If you have a Jeep dealer, ask them who they use and price it out. Typically, they will strip down to the bare metal and recoat it all.

It is possile for you to recoat the bumper yourself. A company called caswell sells a lot of DIY coatings including form of chrome plating. I'd take the claims with a tad of salt, but their website will give you an idea of the process and what's involved.

Powder coating is really not much more than another form, a dry form, of painting. It tends to adhere better than paint and leaves fewer places for moisture, etc. to get in once it's been heat fused.

I've done some decent looking powder coating, but only on things like cameras trying to find a wearable match for painted areas. How do you repair a powder coated bumper?
Try finding a paint very similar in color to the bumpers if it only needs to be covered here or there. Otherwise you can try to buff it out and cover with a non gloss or glossy clear coat to prevent rust from coming back...because it will.

Try rustoleum (local hardware stores, target...), works great!
