How do I make coating from TiO2 powder?

Hello, I've synthesized TiO2 powder and I'm thinking of doing application on coating. How do I make coating from TiO2 powder? How do I make coating from TiO2 powder?
The method I use for applying TiO2 coatings is plasma spray, but is expensive, and your powder has to be able to flow trough an powder feeding hose without clogging (for that you need an even powder size distribution and a round shape powder morphology)

In plasma spray you melt the powder -using plasma- and project it at high speed towards the substrate you want to coat, making a nice uniform coating with the molten droplets-called splats-How do I make coating from TiO2 powder?

Salary Options of a powder coating Operator in Toledo?

My boss came up to me and asked how i felt about salary, i run a paint booth and work like 40 hrs a week in the winter and 50 - 60 in the summer months, i currently make 10.50 an hour. how much should i tell him???Salary Options of a powder coating Operator in Toledo?
I figure you made about $26000 last year. According to the current Occupational Outlook Handbook, your boss is paying you in the lowest 10% of what people doing the same job are making in the US. However, you need to take into account the economy in Toledo, which I know to be very depressed. So, if you figure you'd work the same number of hours, more or less, and make $15/hour (instead of $17 plus, cuz its Toledo), your salary should be about $37.000. However, you didn't say whether with a salary comes benefits (insurance, etc) -- that makes a difference. If so, if the benefits package is pretty good, I'd say $35,000 would be a good number to start negotiating with.

Good luck!

';Median hourly earnings of wage-and-salary transportation equipment painters were $17.15 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $13.29 and $23.08 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10.82, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $28.10 an hour. Median hourly earnings of transportation equipment painters were $17.15 in automotive repair and maintenance shops and $23.98 in motor vehicle manufacturing.';

What would it cost to start a powder coating system, what would you need.how many people does it take to run it?

Typically powder coat systems are continuous conveyor systems. Parts go through a cleaning stage, a rinse, drying, powder coating and baking. Not really a simple business.

What's the Difference between Powder coating & Spray Painting? ?

I have a powder coated/Painted MS pipe. i wants to know which type of painting this, Powder coated/Spray Painted. Is there any methods to identify this by manually like visual inspection, scratch test etc.....What's the Difference between Powder coating %26amp; Spray Painting? ?
Spray painted: Will have smooth shiny surface finish. will easily peel off when scratched with sharp object, even nail.

Powder coat: Will have slightly dull surface with small dimples as ingolf ball. Scratch resistant as the process undergoes heat treatment. Costlier proceduce than spraying. But long lasting, maintenance free. What's the Difference between Powder coating %26amp; Spray Painting? ?
Spray painting : Method used is atomising liquid paint to pass through

nozzle using compressed air. Some times air locking may cause

blistering under paint layer.Finish can be glossy or matty.Generally do not require heat for curing.

Airless spray method is also adopted with high pressure. No chance of air trapping under paint surface.Better paint adhering to metal / primed surface.Generally do not require heat for curing.

Powder coating has electrostatic adhering property needs heat curing , matty surface finish.
powder coating requires the parts be heated for the finish to set up , painting does not

Where can i get detailed information about powder coating ?

Powder coating is a very involved process and depending upon the material that will be coated and the kind of material coating is used, process methods can vary greatly. But you can get considerable help on this subject by going to google books and search for the material. The book I have used as reference is called ';Powder coating technology'; authored by Charles I. Hester, Rebecca L. Nicholson and Margery A. Cassidy.Where can i get detailed information about powder coating ?

  • Will powder coating affect the strength of my mtb aluminum frame?

The frame has already gone through heat treatment during the manufacturing process. Will powder coating affect the strength of my mtb aluminum frame?
No. The application of powdercoat will NOT affect the frame strength.

If the frame was built of 7000 series aluminum (usually 7005) it was probably NOT heat treated since this type of alloy has less of a need to be treated.

The problem rears its head when the old paint is removed... if it is sandblasted the frame will become work hardened and worthless.

Make ABSOLUTELY sure that whoever removes the old paint uses a solvent bath (paint remover) or walnut chips to blast off the old finish. If it has been sandblasted you will need to have the frame annealed and retempered before painting... a VERY expensive proposition. Will powder coating affect the strength of my mtb aluminum frame?
no, but it'll be a bit heavier, like 2 or 3 grams, which is like nothing
I personally would not risk it. I've worked with two different powdercoating shops (for coating my own parts), and they refuse to coat any critical aluminum items that have been specifically heat treated, for fear that the temper could be changed in their curing ovens.

Without knowing your alloy, or its temper, there's no specific way to research what 45 minutes of 400 degrees might do to it. At the very least your frame will undergo some serious expansion, and if the stresses were not normalized AFTER welding, that might anger one of the welds if it had any imperfections.

If it was HEAT TREATED, your frame is probably 6061, which is hardened through a complex series of steps that I don't profess to understand, but that are VERY specific. One of those steps ';hardens'; the aluminum, and is often done at temperatures similar to those in a Powdercoating oven. In the Military Handbook for Metallic Materials and Elements for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures, page 3-14, they specify that no heat-treatable alloy should be subjected to temperatures between 212-400 degrees, because it will change the temper in some way.

The only exception they give, is if the initial hardening step was deliberately skipped, because the later exposure to the higher temperatures was planned/known in advance. You run the risk of, at the very least, having your frame be further hardened by the powdercoating, which will make it more brittle, and less ';tough';. Not good for a mountain bike. Since both 6061 and 7005 are heat treatable alloys, I'm sure either one could be affected by time in an oven. In fact, 7005 becomes even ';harder'; than 6061, which could be why it is often left ';as is'; (no heat treatment) when constructing bikes. The last thing a mountain bike frame needs to be, is too ';hard';.

If you're still sold on powder coating, a good idea might be to call the manufacturer of your bike's frame (some of their websites recommend this), and see what they say. Some powder coaters have no clue about metalurgy, so do your OWN research, and don't just accept the ';it will be fine'; answer you might get from them.

If it were my bike, I'd get it painted, and keep the heat away from it.

    Good Luck

What is the best area for an aluminum windows, doors & curtain wall, glass factory, powder coating factory?

In an industrial estate near a major city.

Can anyone give me websites about powder coating aluminum mtb frames?

I seem to remember seeing Al frames that were powder coated on the market. I once had an Al frame I wanted to repaint and looked into powder coating. I wasn't told anything about altering the integrity, but was warned that once I did this, I wouldn't be able to repaint it again as the 'paint' is really an epoxy that melts and bonds to the metal.

This is more of a followup on your first question, but you get more points for being the first to answer.

I'm not an expert in materials, metallurgy, or finite element analysis, but I've been reading and talking about frame design for over 20 years - here's my take on it.

I think the reason the motorcycle manufacturers are hesitant to condone powder coating is that their products are designed to go though repeated heating and cooling when bolted to a rigid surface. If the part were heated up without such support, warpage could occur, minute enough to not be noticeable until the part is mounted and run at the high engine temps, but then either cracking or warping which could result in engine failure if it were a crank case or water pump component.

Bike frames don't have this problem. The welding process puts the joint through temperatures high enough to melt the aluminum and form the bond. Then the frame forms a rigid structure which is designed to be supportive unto itself. If the entire frame is then heated though a powder coating process, the structure should remain rigid, and the characteristics of the metal (ductility, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity) should remain unchanged as the temps are no where near what aluminum can handle with out altering the 'matrix'.

REmember, most shops that do this work have _NO_ experience with bicycles. I once had a steel fork from my Basso GAP chrome plated by a shop that specialized in automotive work. He did it cheap because he wouldn't guarantee the work. It came out beautiful, and he said that was some of the best quality material and workmanship he had seen - referring to the fork, not his work. That was 20 years ago and it still looks great.

The point is, most shops that specialize in automotive work are afraid of bicycles because they think they are all cheap shee-ite. They really have no idea of the amount of time and energy that went into research and development of the metals and structure of the modern bicycle.

Of course, I could be completely wrong on this, but I think it's at least worth discussion.

Sorry, I don't know of any specific powder coating facilities, but if you do some research on frame builder in your area, they most likely would be able to turn you on to someone they know.

Metal furniture: Paint Over Powder Coating?

I would like to paint over some metal furniture that currently has a powder coating. Can this be easily done? What is involved? What kind of paint works best?Metal furniture: Paint Over Powder Coating?
I did it to my patio set which was powder coated and it is time consuming but can be done. First, inspect all of the joints, sometimes they use welds that rust and if that is the case wire brush off any loose pieces. Use a good cleaner and make certain any grease or dirt is removed prior to priming. I used the Rustoleum rust encapsulating and resisting primer even though my set is aluminum because the welds were all rusted. Then I used the Rustoleum metal paint and I chose the Textured Wrought Iron Black because the powder coating I went over had a pebbled texture and I didn't want to sand. I love it because it looks like new years later, doesn't rust and can be washed off with a hose. BTW, I do NOT recommend the Hammerite products, they do not encapsulate or resist rust and you will be repainting the set in a couple of years like I am repainting every piece I used it on. Another hint, invest a few dollars in the triggered spray gun attachment for the top of the spray paint. It really helps save your fingers and helps to give long, even sweeps. Also, maintain the distance suggested by the paint manufacturer using light coats to avoid runs and drips.Metal furniture: Paint Over Powder Coating?
Its entirely possible to do so, may take some trial and error though to get something that works well. If you're painting over powder coating, try getting some rustoleum primer and paint of your choice (rustoleum is good metal paint for indoor/outdoor.) The primer goes on first so that the paint can adhere to the surface well, just make sure the surface is clean before the primer goes on, hope this helps. best wishes.
what the others have mentioned are very good tips, but i would like to add one extra step in the very beginning: after inspecting all parts/pieces, lightly sand the surfaces being painted. it'll allow for the primer to grip better, and create a better finish overall. any grit sandpaper is fine, just ask the local hardware store which they think is recommended to sand down powder coating. i think a 150 grit is fine, in my opinion.

how big is the scope of powder coating?the indian ssi dealing with powder coating what are there chanses of going in international marketWhat does powder coating mean?why and when is it used and for what purpose?
It's an alternative to paint that is applied as a powder then cured by heat (see link). The main advantage to it is that it doesn't require volatile solvents, so it doesn't pollute the air or endanger workers' health as much as some types of paint do.What does powder coating mean?why and when is it used and for what purpose?
Powder coating is a method of applying color to metal parts. It is akin to painting, but uses a slightly different technology. Powder coating is not subject to the same problems that many painting techniques are -- it bonds permanently to the metal and will not chip or flake. It can be scratched though, if the scratch goes deep enough to penetrate the powder coat to the metal beneath. Powder coating is most often applied to aluminum surfaces.

How can you prevent dust explosions in a cyclone style powder recovery system, in a powder coating plant?

ESD (Electric-Static Discharge) Workboots, explosion proof switch and power boxes with a positive pressure airflow to keep dust from entering. Absolutly no open contacts where a spark may occur should be out in the open. make sure all pipes carring the powder are grounded so they will not build up a charge; better yet, ground anything metal to keep from building a charge.

IS powder coating resistant to moisture?

Thinking about doing a bathtub, would it hold up against water and typical bathtub use applications?IS powder coating resistant to moisture?
That really depends on the brand and it's expected uses. An alternative which IS resistant is a glazing kit. You can have someone come in and reglaze your tub and tiles or, if you are really good at painting and that sort of thing, you can opt to go to a store such as Lowe's and pick up a reglazing kit. These are designed to withstand water and wear and tear and can be used on tubs, tiles, sinks, and toilets. Be sure to ventelate the area well. If your bathroom doesn't have a window or extractor fan place a regular fan near the bathroom door facing an open window. Good luck.

How does powder coating affect wheel balance?

I wanna PC my OEM Z wheels but i wonder if it may have a dramatic affect on my tire balance. Has anyone had this done to their wheels? also how much does this usually run in the bay area? How does powder coating affect wheel balance?
I've worked in a wheel manufacturing plant for over 2 years. They get the balance checked at the machining level. Then they get polished and powder coated. If a wheel is ';unbalancable'; it is not sent any farther through the process. I do not believe that a simple powder coat will throw off the balance of a wheel so much that it wouldn't be balancable after the fact. As stated in another answer, the tires have to be removed for the pc process, so it seems logical that they will get re-balanced when the pc process is complete. In the bay area, you can plan on it being expensive to pc any type of wheels. Call around, search the web, investigate prices on this before just shelling out big bucks!!!! In short...Powder Coating wheels will NOT affect your balance beyond drivability. Hope this helps you. Good luck!!!How does powder coating affect wheel balance?
No, once they are balanced, you shouldn't have to worry about keeping them balanced unless the person who balances them doesn't put the weights on properly. The only way the balance would be thrown off would be loss of the counterweights used. Report Abuse

And thats a rarity...thx for choosing my answer as the best answer, glad to be of help to you :) Report Abuse

it will not affect your wheel balance about 100 per wheel
They would have to be stripped of thier clear coat first, sand blasting. They are going to have to be reballanced before they are reinstalled anyway. It's not going to through it off any.
Well, I have the rims and hubs on my bike powder coated with no problems.

Beings as you'll have to break down the wheel (remove tire and valve stem) to have your wheels p/c'd, when they remount the tire (WITH a NEW valve stem[cheap insurance]), have them balance it also.

What is the difference between plating metals and powder coating?

Plating metals can be electrolytic or electroless. The metal is oxidized from elemental state to charged state. Ie Cu will go to Cu++ in solution and then reduced to Cu on a charged metallized object. Powder coating uses a powder spray, is then heated to form a layer around the object. What is the difference between plating metals and powder coating?
Powder coating is a process by which a dry, powdered plastic blend is electrostatically applied to the surface and then heated to it's melting point. It's very durable and an expensive process, but cheaper than electroplating. What is the difference between plating metals and powder coating?
Plating Metals requires a process known as Electroplating...powder coating i believe is just a metallic finish which is sprayed on an adhesive. Electroplating requires the desired object to be placed in an ionic solution with the desired plate metal...When current is enduced to the anode and cathode, the metal slowly dissolves and replates on the object

How to prep (clean) metal before painting (or powder coating) without it rusting? ?

I have some metal parts that I have sand blasted and now I need to wash them off to remove the dust. The only thing is is that If I wash them off with water they rust and that messes up the coating.

So what chemical do I use to wash metal without rusting it or leaving a residue?

p.s. Ive tried alcohol but Im not sure if it leaves a residue and was thinking of trying acetone. How to prep (clean) metal before painting (or powder coating) without it rusting? ?
When I sand blast a part. I do it immediately before painting. I just blow off the dust with an air hose and paint it. The surface is already clean, so the dust will not stick very well.

If you really want to clean the metal first, you can spray it with brake parts cleaner. Use a fast drying cleaner and it will remove all the dust and any oils from handling. Paint it soon or it will rust in a few hours to a few days. If you can seal the parts in a plastic bag, this will slow down the oxidation.

Rubbing alcohol has water in it, so I don't recommend it. Acetone will work good, but I don't know if it can be sprayed. If you wipe it with any kind of towel, the rough surface from sand blasting may hold lint or fuzz. That's why I say just spray it clean and let it dry.How to prep (clean) metal before painting (or powder coating) without it rusting? ?
I would use Denatured Alcohol - won't leave a residue.

What makes powder coating better than paint?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the products to be coated. It produces a chip-resistent and vibrant finish in most cases.

Unlike liquid paint, no solvents are used, so only negligible amounts of VOCs are released into the air so it is an environmentally friendly process. What makes powder coating better than paint?
Powder coating is basically a paint that is dry and electrically charged. The opposite charge is applied to the thing being painted and the coating is more even and gets to everything. It ain't perfect, however. What makes powder coating better than paint?
Powder coating electrically bonds the paint powder to the object and then its baked in an oven to cure. Since paint is only on the surface powder coating is the way to go now days. A long lasting hard finish that won't peel or flake if the metal was cleaned and prepared properly.
Well, powder coating is paint. When you say paint, you obviously are referring to wet paint. Powder coating uses dry paint. Paint is the solid that is suspended in liquid (water for latex and oil for oil-based) in wet paint. Likewise, the powder in powder coating is also a paint.

The difference is that in wet paint, you appy it and then have to wait for the liquid or moisture to evaporate. In powder coating, liquid is not used, instead the paint is in powder form and is either sprayed or the object is dipped into the powder. The powder sticks due to electrostatic charge. Once the powder is applied, it is then baked in an oven where the powder melts and adheres to the object.

Powder coating has only been around since the late 1960s and has some advantages and disadvantages over wet paint. Regardless of which you use, if the object to be painted is not well prepared, either method of painting will eventually fail - ie chip, crack, bubble, peel. However, assuming that the object is well prepared, many people prefer the powder coat, as it tends to hold up better over time. It acts more like a shell similar to an M%26amp;M candy than when it is painted on wet. Others will say the finish is better wet and not so textured. It really comes down to a matter of preference. Of course, powder coating tends to be more expensive than wet painting, which is why it isn't widely used.

Powder coating question about how to mask letters off most efficiently when painting?

With the letters being raised is their a better way to remove the powder coating after or before paint is cured? I am open to any suggestions, I have thought of a few ways I could do it, but am not sure of the easiest, fastest and most efficient way. If anyone has any ideas I would appreaciate it, ThanksPowder coating question about how to mask letters off most efficiently when painting?
Instead of making a mask what about finding something that you can coat the area you want to mask but will come off after you powder coat. I am thinking rubber cement because once it dries it can be removed - however! do a test piece first, rubber cement will do this on paper but I don't know about other materials.

    After being in the trades for a very long time, and applying thousands of gallons of various paints by various methods, I know this much. ';The MASTER is only as good as his tools.';

(Analogy) I can paint a house with an off brand 4 inch brush, or with an expensive, well known brand name. I already know the qualities of both, and could take my chances with the Ho-Hum

brush. Perhaps even wasting time with extremely obvious brush strokes I'll have to try and smooth out, or picking bristles out of the finish as they shed from the low end brush, BUT WHY would I want to?)

That said, and with no offense meant; QUALITY has no add on words that support it. Something is either a quality product or job, or it isn't. There are no degrees.

Consider too the use, anything coated will get, and the customer. BTW another thing I know. The Customer is always ';right'; even when they aren't. Certainly you have no real liability for HOW a product you've coated is used, other than in the quality of your work, your choice of equipment understanding the tool, and the coatings you use.

If you have the opportunity you should comparitively shop. You need to know QUALITIES of the equipment, features, relaibility, warauntees, serviceability, etc. That extends to materials used, WHO manufactured the spray equipment, tolerances levels in it, even to threads in fittings, etc.

A very valid quote is your best answer. ';You get what you pay for.'; Besides that, at the ';TOP END'; the similarities or differences should be minimal, other than features.

I suspect it's durable enough, from the description, but they're not showing you the whole process. You also have to have an oven big enough to hold what you just sprayed and to bake it. I suspect you might have to sandblast the piece first, too. I read how to do this at home in a hot rod magazine years ago, so I think it's within the realm of do-ability. how much should i expect to pay per item. How much does powder coating cost? i have a cat bed i want to produce and need a company to do powder coating?
    Hi Carbon Steel,

Your question is difficult to answer because there are so many variables. Those being: how big is your item, how many will you want painted at a time, and how good are you at negotiating pricing.

My suggestion would be for you to call a few metal manufactures in your area and talk with them about pricing. What you have in your favor is many companies are struggling right now, and any extra work would help them. So you may be able to negotiate a good price. Talk with at least three different companies.

A rough guess for an item about 2 feet by 3 feet by 10 inches powder coated, and assuming you can have 50 done at a time, would be about $12.00 a piece.

This is just a rough guess, make some calls, and get a written quote before you hand over your product.

    Good luck

Whats the best way to remove paint from a bicycle cheaply before powder coating?

you must sand blast it....... it is really cheap and most powder coaters would charge 20-40 dollars to sand blast it too. My powder coater won't paint anything unless it has been blasted . save your time and get it done right .Whats the best way to remove paint from a bicycle cheaply before powder coating?
the only thing you need spray paint removal... you but that at wal-mart or k-martWhats the best way to remove paint from a bicycle cheaply before powder coating?
Paint stripper and a wire brush.
Try to sandblast it if you can. Your powder coat wont work well unless you do. Other than that, get lots of sandpaper
use a good old scalpel and start scalping off the paints. it does not cost a dime in any cleaner or solutions. you can make a scalpel by finding a narrow piece of sheet metal and sharpning the edges by rubbing on a stone.
Best would be to sandblast the frame clean, but this isn't cheap unless you happen to own a sandblaster. The cheapest thing would be to get some sandpaper and sand the frame down to bare metal. This will take a lot of work, particularly at joints and around supports.
Sand blasting! No actually you could scuff the bike with Sand paper and after wipe it down with mr Clean or any good cleanser...
Bead or media blasting is probably best as it will also result in a uniformly abraded surface, but you could also use chemical strippers and then scuff sand the metal when done.

I've had great success with walnut shell blasting...and heard great things about soda blasting.

yes. as long as the powder material on the coating stays adhered to the surface and doesn't come off. otherwise, all the powder would stick to the sticker which takes it off the surface. Can a sticker stick to powder coating?
yes , as powdercoating is actually a plastic coating which is fused(melted) onto the surface being coated after the object is sprayed electrostatically with the coloured powder used in the process. The coating is what you see on fridge or washing machine panels and has the same ';stickability'; as normal paint

What is difference between prefilter and postfilter in powder coating booth?

The intake filters (prefilters) are the primary defense against foreign particles landing on the painting surface. Any particle larger than 10 microns can cause a defect on a paint job. Intake filters are typically either panels or pads. Intake filters in a down draft booth and prep stations are above the painting surface. In cross draft booths, they are typically in the door.

Exhaust booth filters (postfilters) play an important role in maintaining proper air flow balance, increasing cleanliness of exhaust stacks, reducing maintenance of the exhaust system and in controlling V.O.C. emissions. The purpose of exhaust filters is to capture overspray particles and remove them from the air stream as air is removed or re-circulated back into the booth. What is difference between prefilter and postfilter in powder coating booth?

Will powder coating last in a swimming pool?

the ladder for my pool has been corroding and the paint is peeling off due to the chlorine? I've been pricing them out on the internet and they are more than I would like to spend. I am thinking about having the one I own powder blasted and powder coated but will the powder coating last in the water with chlorine in it? My guess is yes, seeing how most powder coating is made to withstand high heat and other chemicals like antifreeze and oil. Just wanted to hear what others have to say. Will powder coating last in a swimming pool?
Powder coat will do fine in your pool. There are a few different formulations to choose from ie. epoxy, hybrid, polyester, etc. Your best set for a pool would be TGIC polyester. It has good UV resistance, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and is available in a wide range of colors. You can even have a color custom matched but it's rather expensive. Avoid epoxy-based powder coats as they don't hold up in the sun and will get ashy/chalky after about a year. For added protection you can chem-film and/or primer the item prior to powder coating. There are a lot of choices/options and any knowledgeable powder shop will be glad to sit down with you and discuss your specific needs. Good luck. Will powder coating last in a swimming pool?
Try epoxy coating instead. It will last a good while and is harder than other paints. Cheaper than powder coating.
The chlorine isn't the problem. The problem is the water being out of balance and dissolving molecules of metal from your ladder. You must maintain proper balance on the water to keep corrosion of any kind from happening. This means maintaining the pH, alkalinity, hardness, and chlorine levels properly.

That said, you can get it powder coated and it will last a long time, but only if you keep your water balanced. Otherwise you will have the same continuing problem.
you can get it powdercoated. but you must figure out how to remeve it from the cement.
yes it would hold up, but if the one you have is corroding then it is probably a lost cause. Depending on the severity of the corroding.
It would probably work, the 2 elements deteriorating your ladder is the chlorine and water, they would be blocked out by the paint, although I don't know how cheaply you can get it done, good luck.

If I get my motorcycle powder coated will it look as good as a paint job? and will it last as long? also, will it need a clear coat then too?Powder coating on a motorcycle look as good as a paint job?
As buster said this is really meant for frames and wheels. There is a down side. If you suffer a chip or scratch it is darn near impossible to repair as the coating is very very hard and will not sand down like a paint finish. Nor can you spot repair like painted finishes. Durable but difficult to touch up.Powder coating on a motorcycle look as good as a paint job?
The most important thing to consider with powder coating is make sure you are positive about the choice of colours. Removing powder coatings is very difficult, trust me i've tried. Wheels and frame parts including brackets are the parts to consider for this process. If you go with powder coating I would suggest getting a high gloss clear coat on top of the powder coat. Its hard strong and durable. If you are stripping the paint off your self or having it media blasted(prefered) after the parts are paint free go over all of them with a soft stainless wire wheel, surface prep is paramount to a nice finished product. good luck with that
I think powder coat looks good. I have had it done to exhaust and It looked awesome. It is definitely stronger than paint. The number one reason I did it. It is hard to chip. I have heard of guys doing tanks have not seen it. The down side is it is thicker than paint. Adds what looks like 1/8 inch of material
Powder coating is usually applied to parts like frames and wheels, where a durable finish is desired. You will get a higher gloss with paint, which is why body parts are usually painted.
powdercoating is a paint baked on therefore being harder %26amp; longer lasting.
powder coat looks just as goos and soetimes better than paint!

powder is hard to control but doesnt stink to anything until melted so put down some plastic and some sheets is probly the best you could do. they just get a pot and put in the color you want and blow it out and put in a different color.

What industries/businesses need powder coating services?

I am currently working on a university project, it is about a company which provides powder coating services only business to business (for other big companies, such as; powder coating water and gas pipes for energy companies, cooking trays for kitchen appliances manufacturers..), what are the other opportunities in the market? What other industries do you think can use powder coating services? I really appreciate if you help me on this question. Thank you people.

** Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a ';skin.'; The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as ';whiteware';, aluminium extrusions, and automobile and bicycle parts. Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard), to be powder coated using different methods.

Powder coating vs Paint of an high performance engine?

I am worried about heat. If I powder coat my motor will it retain more heat?, what about duribility? Will it peal or crack near the high heat areas like exhaust ports?Powder coating vs Paint of an high performance engine?
There are two kinds of different powder coating materials, thermoplastic(nylon, polyester) and thermoset(epoxy). Thermoplastics will remelt and flow at less than 500 degrees F and will also be affected by engine fluids. Thermosetting coatings crosslink meaning that they are unaffected by most solvents as well as being heat stable after the initial curing process. I think that if you are coating cast parts than you shouldn't have any problems with cracking but aluminium may expand and contract too much during heat cycles and cause cracking in a thermoset product.

As for paint, any catalyzed single stage product should do fine and you've got a ton of color choices as well as the option of matching to the exterior color.Powder coating vs Paint of an high performance engine?

i haven't used it on any engine yet but i have the frame of my old truck done in it and it does really good, its a lot harder than normal paint is and they say to use it on engines that it will stay on longer,i have yet to try this though ,we just now got the frame and chassis done and so far i like the results of it,I'm thinking about dong the engine ,they make a little different paint for the engine parts and it supposed to be better ,the kind i am going to try says it guaranteed to be a tougher paint and will out last normal engine paint,a friend of mine did it on his Chevy and it looks real good and hasn't cracker or peeled off yet it feels like its part of the metal on his, good luck with it.
Normally automotive paint will sustain the heat or an engine. Although headers and exhaust manifolds dont do so well. the best thing for exhaust is called ';jet-hot coating'; it isnt always pretty but it works. also ceramic coating on exhaust. I work in a bodyshop and we have painted several engine blocks and some entire engines with the same paint we use on the exterior of automobiles with no problems at all.
Flat black powder-coat or engine enamel displaces heat the best. Lighter colors seal heat in.
powder coating is the best way to go, it releases the heat, that way your motor will last longer.

  • What is better between powder coating motorcycle rims or just purchasing chrome rims?

I have a Yamaha 2001 YZF R6 and I want to know which would be better between powder coating and chrome rims. What is better between powder coating motorcycle rims or just purchasing chrome rims?
If you want ultimate glossy shine, chrome is the way to go.

However, powdercoating adds very little weight to your wheels, while chrome will be significantly heavier than stock.

Unsprung weight (any weight which the shocks do not carry) has a significant impact on the performance on a motorcycle, specifically turn-in and side/side transition. The heavier the wheels, the more effort you will need to use to change direction. Not good, especially on a bike that is as prized for its quick handling as the R6 is. However, if you are planning on using the bike as a show bike, chrome wheels are a perfectly viable, and relatively cost-effective, solution.

Your cheapest option is to pull your wheels and polish them. You won't get the shine you would from chrome, but then again, the only thing it'll cost you is time. What is better between powder coating motorcycle rims or just purchasing chrome rims?
Power coat is easy to keep clean. Cheaper in the long run.
if your undecided, you could have chrome rims powder coated a metallic silver, so the rim could still show chrome. or powder coat with a glossy finish and have a chrome stripe.
well it depends on what you like
Neither is better. It depends on what you think looks better.

Personally, I would spray bomb them flat black. But that's just me.

Powder coating is a tough and durable system. But drum sets were painted long before powder coating was discovered (1980鈥檚). I would recommend a air dry alkyd for an easy, durable finish. To increase the final look and to make the coating more impact resistance choose a 2 component Urethane system. Hobby shops should offer a small kit. What is a good alternative to powder coating?
There really is no durable cheap alternative to powder coating, however it's very easy to do and not expensive to get started. Plus many like myself do it on the side. If you want more info, visit my blog at http://powdercoatingbeginners.blogspot.com

It all depends on the quaility of the powder coating being used. If the guy has a great rep for doing quaility work then I would not be worried. it sounds the the clear coat turned yellow.many things can cause this including dogs with upturned legs.the wrong cleaner used can turn them yellow also. What can cause powder coating to change color?
It may be rust from metal particles from the brake rotor wear, sticking to the powder coat and getting wet, thus rusting. I use aluminum storm door cleaner (wear rubber gloves)to wash the rims and hose off. I'll bet if your car has rear drum brakes, the problem is only on the front rims!
    acid rain and time
    heat, chemical interaction, sunlight, water/oxidation
    acid rain...
Your rims probably had a poor powder coating job and the uv light is causing a chemical reaction along with your polish that you use.

  • Powder coating?

What is it? What's the cost? Can it be done at home? If so, how's it done?Powder coating?
Powder coating is a chemical coating that comes in a variety of formulations. From the Powder Coating Institute's book Powder Coating: The Complete Finisher's Handbook, Volume One, ';Typically powder coatings consist of resins, a crosslinker, pigments and extenders, flow aids and a degassing solvent (solids)'; There are two types of powder coating - thermosetting and thermoplastic. I presume you would be interested in thermosetting for coating auto parts, lawn furniture, etc.

The most common themosetting powders from my experience are Polyester, Polyester TGIC (triglycidyl isocyanurate), Acrylic and Epoxy. There are others but I will spare you. These powder can have a variety of desirable characteristics such as durability or UV resistance. You should ask your powder supplier about the properties of the powder you are about to use.

Powder is applied through an electrostatic coating process where the part is grounded and the powder has an electric charge applied to it. This allows the powder to adhere to the part through the curing process.

Powder coating is very economical and environmentally friendly. It is recyclable (powder that doesn't hit the part may be reused if clean).

Can it be done at home? Yes, I know of people who do it at home with relatively basic coating equipment. I've even seen coating equipment for the backyard mechanic to coat and then cure in his/her kitchen oven.

For home coating you would require the proper equipment (a powder gun of some sort with equipment to spray the powder. A way to thoroughly clean and hang the parts, generally via a hook and of course and oven of some sort to get the 375-450 degree F required to properly gel and cure the powder (temps vary with the powder, but it is pretty much always above 360 F).

Problems with coating at home: Long term adhesion will not be good. Even if you get a veryclean surface prior to coating without a pretreatment step there is nothing to foster adhesion between the substrate (metal in most, but not all, cases). This does not mean your powder won't stick, but in the long run you will have adhesion issues if the coating is scratched or compromised in any way (especially if exposed to the environment). This could lead to disappointment for you or your customer.

The professional accomplishes adhesion through the application of of a conversion coating, most commonly iron phosphate with powder coating. This type of conversion coating or pretreatment is generally NOT available to the consumer. However, if you are starting a business I would begin by calling local chemical companies in your area. Tell them you are looking for a conversion coating for powder coating. Eventually you will find one that might help you.

    Good Luck!Powder coating?
They apply a powder to a piece of metal then bake it to the metal. When it cools, it's like a thick coat of paint the is impervious to chips and cracking as well as scratches. It may not take a really high heat to do it but doing it at home is unlikely. The oven gets hot enough but you can't put anything but small pieces in it and they need to be hung so they won't stick to anything while cooking and then there's the mess it makes when some of the powder coating drips off. The cost will be different from place to place but where I am the cost is much cheaper than painting.
Special painting process -- very hard and durable. A lot of new cars are coming out with some of the trim done in powder coat.

Can be done at home with proper equipment -- but best left to a professional as mistakes are hard to fix. A lot of factory equipment is done in powder coat. What I have seen so far on the new cars is not very attactive but will probably last.
Its a very tough type of ceramic coating very expensive but lasts it does not chip or wear off can be in any color is like rhino lining
Powdered paint is put onto metal pieces electrostatically and then into a heated room where it is baked on. No can't do at home
There are do it yourself kits, but I wouldn't think they could be as good as a professional finish.

The powder is sprayed at low pressure, and clings to the metal by electro-static cling. Then it is put in an industrial oven to bake, which melts the powder and makes it run together into a near bullet-proof smooth finish. You can take a hammer and dent the metal, but the coating will still stay stuck to the frame.

Can I bring powdered potassium aluminum sulfate (tawas) in my luggage to the airport?

Well, I use it for my underarm hygiene... Not really fond of using roll-ons. I will be working abroad full time for 2 years. Don't want to be caught up with the dilemma of where to find some when I am already there.. So, I am planning of bringing a bunch.. may be 1/4 kilo will do.

Thanks! Can I bring powdered potassium aluminum sulfate (tawas) in my luggage to the airport?
In my opinion if the material meets the airline safety requirements you can pack it in your checked luggage. 1/4 kilo is only a little more than 1/2 pound, so that is not really very much.

If it could be mistaken for an illegal substance I would be sure that it is in a marked original package from the manufacturer and I would get an MSDS for the material and pack it with the material. An MSDS is a Material Safety Data Sheet. It will tell the TSA baggage inspector what he needs to know about the material if he becomes suspicious about it.

I need to use aluminium dust for some painting.

However it is very expensive product, far to expensive for me to purchase. However could I purchase aluminium foil, and using a sander grind the foil into dust?

Or can anyone else suggest a good way of producing aluminium dust?Aluminum dust/powdered aluminium?
they first response is correct. hoverer you can get aluminium paint and in spray cans have you considered that?

does it have to be 'dust'?Aluminum dust/powdered aluminium?
No, you cant use a grinder. Firstly it will become clogged very quickly and secondly it wont produce fine enough particles anyway. The reason its so expensive is because it has to be made chemically. I'm not sure of the exact chemicals they use but they basically have to be mixed together in an aqueous solution and they react to form aluminum which precipitates out of the solution. So the particles are practically atom sized, they can't be made from a solid block.

Aluminum dust is in all metallic paint churie.
The only reason I can think of for wanting aluminium dust is the production of thermite. How is aluminium dust used for painting?
Dear Aluminium grinding is very dangerouse and can be a source of fire, However cheeper chinese and indian sources are available for paint use.
Try Schmincke Tro-col powdered gouache, not too expensive (my last was around æ‹¢4 a jar) it's a fake silver, made I suspect from aluminium. It can be sprinkled onto other wet paint, or mixed to produce a paint itself.

Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of aluminium powder and a metal oxide which produces an aluminothermic reaction known as a thermite reaction. It is not explosive, but can create short bursts of extremely high temperatures focused on a very small target for a short period of time.

**** The aluminium reduces the oxide of another metal, most commonly iron oxide, because aluminium is highly combustible:

    Fe2O3 + 2Al -%26gt; 2Fe + Al2O3 + Heat

The products are aluminium oxide, free elemental iron, and a large amount of heat. The reactants are commonly powdered and mixed with a binder to keep the material solid and prevent separation.

Starting crystals with aluminum potassium sulfate powder?

I have a homework assignment over the summer which is due on the first day of school. My assignment is to test the growth of crystals in different temperatures.

First I have to start the crystals. I did this by mixing water and my aluminum potassium sulfate (powdered) until it was saturated. Then I put the crystal mix outside. I did this two times and it still didn't turn out like hard rock crystals. Instead it is still powdery. So what did I do wrong. And how to I get it right.

Thanks in advance.Starting crystals with aluminum potassium sulfate powder?
    carebear,

In the crystal growing game, you ';crashed out'; the precipitate. You really need patience to do good crystal growth -- there is a very good explanation of doing it in the reference below.

Basically, you should heat the solution ***just*** enough to dissolve all the salt. Then, it works best if you have a ';seed crystal'; that you can put in the solution as it cools. ***Easy does it*** when it comes to cooling. You may not even need to put it outside -- let it cool off ***slowly***.

If you have enough material, you might want to get multiple batches going -- no, they won't get jealous of each other and try to compete to get the best crystals. It's just that sometimes I found that the edges of the containers can have slight differences, and the surface roughness will help to initiate crystallization.

Hope that helped (and good luck)!

Will powder coating affect the strength of my mtb aluminum frame?

    Good Luck

No. Aluminum and many other substances that are impossible to ignite in solid form may ignite vigorously, even explosively, in the form of a powder suspended in air. Throw a match into a pile of ordinary flour, and the match just goes out. Get a room full of fine flour dust suspended in the air, add a spark and you have a powerful explosion. Same with aluminum.

It has been used to weld the broken drive shafts of steamships in an emergency. Why does the mixture of powdered iron oxide and powdered aluminum make thermite?
To my best knowledge it's not just the straight aluminum that does it. There has to be some water present too, as well as a bit of aluminum hydroxide.

That combination makes the aluminum *highly* prone to pulling oxygen, in a galvanic manner, from metals it is exposed to. And iron holds on to oxygen fairly intensely as well, so when the iron oxide loses its oxygen, it heats up and *melts*.

I think it has something to do with the way the oxygen binds, whether it's single-bound (with one electrical charge) or double-bound (with two, clearly).

I hope this helps. Edit: The Answerer above me is correct. It's a case of triple-bound chemistry, basically. Lots of energy in those molecules there.

I need advice for MacGuyvering a backlit etch-a-sketch. I cant seem a way to work around the Aluminum powder?

I have had this idea for a while now, and wanted to make one as a gift. I plan on using LEDs. What I cant figure out is what material to use that would prevent the super fine Aluminum power/pigment from coating and thus blocking any light from the LEDs. I do know about the possible dangers of the powder combusting (grain silo effect). I'ts prolly why the parent company never tried to market one. But I'm sure I can work around that problem. One idea I had involves the use of 2-way mirror tint...the other a sandwich of plexiglas with the leds stuck somewhere so the LEDs/light path are 100% clear of being blocked or coated with the powder. Is there even another type of powder that may work, even if it meant sacrificing the ability to draw with fine detail? Thanks for any advice.I need advice for MacGuyvering a backlit etch-a-sketch. I cant seem a way to work around the Aluminum powder?
Don't bother with back lights. Front lights will solve the problem and the little box with relatively thick acrylic front is a perfect candidate. Drill holes in the edges of the plexiglass that just allow LEDs as plugs. I mean drill on the red frame where the plastic is both red plastic AND clear acrylic. Use clear silicone seal (like clear bathtub caulking) as the glue and black silicone seal on the front as glue and insulation for the wires. Suddenly you are the genius with the nicely illuminated etch a sketch.

The clear acrylic will conduct the light like fiber optic. Only here, the light conductor is across the whole screeen.

The powder will reflect any color light and the clear areas will still look black. That is, the etch a sketch will still look like an etch a sketch drawing. With a back lite, the powdered area will look dark and the places it is sctratch off will be bright. A back light will make a negative picture of the regular etch a sketch look.

Just curious. What color or colors are you shooting for? White light? Red? Green? Maybe it is time to market big etch a sketch for advertisements? Christmas displays? Great idea!

Yes, aluminum powder is highly flammable. Be sure to drill outside and have a clear path to get away from the thing should the worst happen. The powder will be most flammable when the powder is fluffed and mixed with air. Let the little booger lie still for a few moments before opening it with the drill bit. Good luck - be careful with power tools and chemical glues.I need advice for MacGuyvering a backlit etch-a-sketch. I cant seem a way to work around the Aluminum powder?
I would use fiber optics rather than led's this way it keeps the light source away from the aluminum powder, and you can rig it up so you can change the back light color by changing a film color in front of the fiber optic strands at the source.

Powered aluminum or any such powered substance is very explosive. Regular aluminum is not.

The mixture called thermite is powdered aluminum and iron oxide. ... Also, powdered aluminum is the primary fuel (to be oxidized) in slow explosives ...How would the behaviors of powdered aluminum and regular aluminum differ?
    in wat context

powderd aluminuim has a vast increase in surafce area making chemical reactions happen alot faster, same for melting it, be bad for puting a current through

normal alu, i presume u mean plate, would have higher heat resistance, would ttake longer on chemical reactions due to smaller surface area and would be better for currents running through it...How would the behaviors of powdered aluminum and regular aluminum differ?
The powder would react faster with other elements because of the increased surface area.

I can not find aluminum powder :(!!!?

I saw on the internet that I could find of aluminum powder in the paint shop, the more I do not find anything, I can only go in one store metais.

i against the aluminum powder there?

    where I could find?

thanksI can not find aluminum powder :(!!!?
Please tell me you're not making thermite. Please tell me you're not making thermite. You are not making thermite. That stuff is dangerous. Please don't make it.

  • Why does the mixture of powdered iron oxide and powdered aluminum make thermite?

I was just wondering why it creates such intense heat, i mean what do those two substances have to do with fire. Why does the mixture of powdered iron oxide and powdered aluminum make thermite?
    the reaction

    Fe2O3 + 2 Al ---%26gt; 2 Fe + Al2O3 + heat

    .....................................( LOTS of heat !!! )

This is a replacement reaction, not a combustion.

It produces very pure, molten iron.

How did a paint made from powdered aluminum contribute to the disaster?

The Hindenburg was filled with flammable hydrogen, but recent research suggests that hydrogen wasn't the only dangerous material involved in its tragic demise.

An aluminothermic reaction between a powdered aluminum and a metal oxide. This is commonly referred to as themite. Add sulfur and you have thermate - temperatures can reach above 4000 degrees F.

Good luck! How did a paint made from powdered aluminum contribute to the disaster?
ANY powder, in enough concentration, is flammable and potentially explosive.

Even iron, in powdered form, can make a huge fireball.
